Y-tunnus

Y-tunnus
Y-tunnus is the Finnish business ID (seven digits, a hyphen and a check digit). PRH and the Tax Administration issue it through YTJ when they accept a founding notification. After an electronic notification it is often available immediately.
The ID identifies the business on invoices, in bank onboarding, in payment services and in official registers. It is not a licence. Some trades still need a separate permit. See Luvat ja ilmoitukset.
The same YTJ process can also put you in the Ennakkoperintärekisteri, the VAT register and the employer register. Those are separate ticks.
A Kevytyrittäjä who only uses a billing service does not receive a personal Y-tunnus. The service’s ID appears on the invoice.
Company names are checked in YTJ and in PRH’s name service before registration. An Oy name must include Osakeyhtiö or Oy.
Practical advice
Put the Y-tunnus on every invoice and contract.
Report a new address, a new board member or the end of the business in YTJ. Official letters follow the registered address.
If you are waiting for Starttiraha, ask the employment officer when you should request the ID.
